Time to get the red petticoat out girls!
In Britain and many parts of Europe, February 29th, Leap Year Day, is traditionally the day when a girl can propose marriage to a man. A red petticoat should be worn as a hint of her intention. If she is turned down then the man must pay a penalty to soften the blow, something of the girl’s choosing - new clothes, a diamond ring…
According to an old Irish legend St Bridget struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men on this day to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar way to how Leap Day balances the calendar.
